The wedding band is more than just a ring — it’s one of the oldest symbols of love and commitment in human history. Its origins trace back over 5,000 years to ancient Egypt, where couples exchanged rings made from braided hemp or reeds as a symbol of eternity. The circle, with no beginning and no end, represented endless love and the sacred cycle of life.
The Romans later adopted this tradition, often using iron rings to signify strength and permanence. They also began the custom of placing the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand, believing it contained the “vena amoris” — the vein of love, that led directly to the heart.
Wedding bands grew even more meaningful during times of war, especially in World War II, when soldiers began wearing rings to feel close to their spouses while overseas. This act of remembrance and loyalty helped the band become a universal symbol of marriage.
Today, wedding bands carry centuries of history and emotion, a small circle that holds a lifetime of love, promise, and shared purpose.
